Conscious Manifestion Series - Quieting Mind Chatter
“The whirling of the mind must be stilled.
The thoughts that arrange the molecules of the mirror of consciousness need the calmness of a still pool—
that we may be able to see clearly.”
Mark L. Prophet, Elizabeth Clare Prophet in Lords of the Seven Rays.
This exercise is useful when you are experiencing mind chatter that is negative—obsessive thoughts, anxiety, depression, etc. It can also be used to train the mind to hold a quieter state. If practiced regularly, the body sensation (relaxing the tongue) will provide a quick anchor to still the mind in time of need.
In Awakening the Mind, A Guide to Mastering the Power of Your Brain Waves , Anna Wise describes how your brainwaves are in fast beta when you are in mind chatter mode. With very fast beta you experience anxiety. With mind chatter we sub-vocalize whether aware of this or not, and the tongue is taught, as if ready for speaking. By relaxing the tongue, we stop the sub-vocalizing and thereby begin to quiet the mind. It is very difficult to think in words with a relaxed tongue.
I believe that you need to think in words in order to think negatively. When we sub-vocalize, we are primarily using the left hemisphere of the brain or in L-mode (verbal) and our thoughts come through to us filtered by the left brain (negative). This filtering deletes any transcendent thoughts (R-mode), which are not easily verbalized. When we deliberately stop the verbalization we stop the negative chatter and also allow for the transcendent thoughts.
With a relaxed tongue you will also notice that your breathing slows down, as your rate of breathing and state of mind are inseparable.
“The slower your rate of breathing,
the more control you have over your mind.”
Bring your awareness to your breathing and follow the in and out breath for a few cycles. Breathe in relaxation, and breathe out any tension. Focus on any area in the body that feels tense or in pain, and imagine breathing in to that area and releasing what is held on the exhalation.
Continue focusing on the breath.
o Breathe in peace into you mind, and breathe out any unease.
o Breathe in stillness, breathe out any thoughts.
Next, spend a few moments relaxing the tongue. Really relax it completely. Allow yourself to deepen the relaxation of the tongue on each exhalation. Spend at least a minute breathing in relaxation and flowing this relaxation to the tongue on the exhalation. You may experience the tongue becoming shorter or thicker—just really focus on relaxing it.
Now allow the jaw to open and the chin to drop slightly. Really feel the relaxation all over the mouth area, including the lips. Spend at least one minute focusing on relaxing this whole area. Every so often, bring your awareness specifically to the tongue, and sense how it is key in getting the whole area relaxed.
Be aware of your mind becoming quiet and unfocused. Remain in this deep quiet for as long as you wish. Whenever you feel your mind drifting or crowding with thoughts, come back to relaxing the tongue.
When you feel done, tune into your mind and thank it for the inner peace you just experienced. Begin to come out very slowly and deliberately. Move your fingers, toes. Stretch gently, and feel yourself breathing in clarity into your mind. Allow yourself to feel the transition from deeply quiet mind to a more alert mind. Tune into the change in your tongue as you do this.
Whenever you think of it during the day, focus on your tongue and relax it and feel your mind becoming quieter as you do this. The more you connect the two events— relaxed tongue -> quiet mind —the more you anchor it in your body and the easier it will be to use on demand (when in anxiety, worry, or obsessive negativity).
